For Grown-Ups

Everything else here is written for a child to read. These pages are the other way round, for whoever's doing the explaining.

Straight answers, no hand-wringing. We won't tell you what your family should do, just what the options are and what each one teaches.

  1. How much pocket money? The honest answer, which isn’t a number. What families actually do, whether to tie it to jobs, what changes with age, and what to do when money is tight.
  2. When money is tight What children already notice, what’s fair to tell them, and where the line sits between being honest and handing over a worry they can do nothing about.
  3. “Are we rich?” Rarely a question about money. How to work out what they’re really asking, and answers that work whether things are tight or comfortable.
  4. Needs and wants — printable What the words mean, why the line between them moves, and 24 cards to cut out and sort. The third pile is where the thinking happens.
  5. Conversation starters — printable Thirty questions for the car or the dinner table, three for every zone of Money World and one for each age. Made to be printed and stuck on a fridge.

Still to come

More of these arrive as questions come up. If there’s something you’d find useful, do tell us. It shapes what gets written next more than anything else does.
